That big green tree is a Red Oak with at least a 3' diameter. I've collected 200lbs of acorns so far which is slightly odd because supposedly acorn production in Red Oaks falls dramatically after 21" dropping to almost nil at 40".
This is one of the few spots that shade intolerant Oaks can grow on my heavily forested property. Not much else growing on ledge but a few Red Maples, Birch & the occasional pine. Nothing big
enough to shade out the hundreds of Oaks coming up from the Mother Tree.
