My first post. I will introduce myself later in introduction topic. But I need to reply on this.

In my country, CROATIA, beekeepers are using high toxic medicament for varroa destructor. This winter many beekeepers lost more than 60% of their hives. I lost none, but I m a beginner and maybe I had beginner's luck. But I didn't treat my beehives with any chemicals, I only used sugar dusting and it was working. But I did buy bee vital which is very soft liquid against varroa with low levels of acids. But now hearing this guy I would like to try and see if I can go without treating.

Any ideas on this? Is this guy real about not treating it for five years? Is sugar dusting ok?

Yes many of us are finding that the way to go is treatment free . I dont intend to treat either even sugar .
Why ? Well the short answer is that it does not work unless you define working as paying the producers of these nasty chemicals lots of money for ever .
The long answer is that it does not work as you can see from the % of losses suffered by the conventional beekeepers on a far too regular basis because all you are doing is propping up systems with dynamics that are inherently unstable using what could be called in human terms- drugs . Bees and verroa are finding a stable relationship in the wild as bees that are not "clean " enough and verroa that are too vampire like , kill each other . What you will be left with in the wild is tame verroa and clean bees . Fight this and you loose your bees . I would suggest to go with nature .

Yes, there are many beekeepers who have been treatment free for multiple years. All indications are that losses will be incurred while getting there, though. I've done a lot of reading on the topic but, I am a beginner, too. I will be entering my 3rd year this year. Therefore, the only practical advice I can give you is to do a lot of reading so you at least know what to expect.

David ... I did not realize that was Heaf's site. I always thought it was Chandler's as it was biobees.com. It does make clear at the bottom of the page that it is Heaf's and the Chandler supplied the space on biobees.

David Heaf posts regularly on the Yahoo warré site page thingy which he runs as well . Both Tel and I maybe others are members there too
