Found a permaculture type guy from Edmonton Alberta and he has a nice plant database on his website suitable for dry prairie Zone 3. Yehaw! So that saves me some work. Edmonton is very similar to my location, on the east side of the Rocky Mountain front with fierce wind and bone numbing cold, alternating with chinook winds that can raise the temperature 80 degrees in 24 hours. We just had a frost last friday evening (June 12) that took out about a third of my garden.

that's wonderful, we are awfully danged close with part of our property zone 4, some of the warmer areas i can get away with zone 5, but always take a chance on losing them in a hard winter
