Slime molds are incredibly interesting -- albeit rather disgusting looking sometimes. I once watched a slime mold travel across my
yard from a spot on a stump to a building over 5 feet away in just 2 days. Each day it moved a bit further. You could almost watch it moving!
They aren't plants and they aren't animals but they behave rather like both. I read somewhere that they are actually individual single-celled "creatures?" called protists that get-together using chemical signals to call to one another until they accumulate in this huge mass. Then-- SOMEHOW?!!! -- they assign jobs to each individual so some of them become the slimey base that sort of slithers along, eating dead vegetation in their path, while others transform into the reproductive parts of the whole colonial organism.
Who needs science fiction when we have Nature?
