We were sent an abused amaryllis! These are for sale, it was shipped to us.
Take a bulb, peel off the loose stuff, shove a wire rack in it's tail, dip it in cheese wax, and sell it as "guaranteed to bloom, no water required." Well, yeah, it will bloom, it's knows it's it's last chance before it dies. POOR THING!!
I took the wax off, and the wire, it has rootlets, it was trying. I potted it. Hope it makes it. What a terrible thing to do to an amaryllis bulb!!
Poor thing :(

Awww...I did not know they coat them in wax, stick them with wires and all.

I haven't ever had an Amaryllis over the winter, though I have had other "forced" bulbs - tulips or paperwhites. The ones I've had were not as abused as the Amaryllis you described.

One winter, over 23 years ago, I had some paperwhites in the house, which were taking their sweet time getting ready to open. Then, the day they bloomed was the day I gave birth to my son. It just seemed so right.  It was February 2nd, Grounghog's Day, Masanobu Fukuoka's birthday, and Imbolc or St. Brigid's Day. A very special day for many reasons. My daughter, who was almost 7, created a little ditty that she sang over and over that day: "My brother is a groundhog, a groundhog, a groundhog, a groundhog! My brother is a groundhog!"

So while what you described, Pearl is yucky, it still reminded me of some winter flowers that I associate with joy. I hope your Amaryllis comes back happy and brings a bit of joy to your house, too.
