I was searching for information on processing Black Walnut husks and happened upon this thread.

At least one source says Black Walnut is toxic to goats:

One should differentiate somewhat between feeding leaves and feeding nut husks. Black Walnut husks are used as a human parasiticide and at least one source says to use it for worming goats:

The husks are very different in composition from the leaves, although some of the same constituents are present. I would reserve feeding Black Walnut husks for medicinal purposes only.

Which brings me to my question: What is the best way to process Black Walnut husks to retain their medicinal qualities and achieve long-term (one or two years) storage.

I think goats tolerate, in fact require and benefit from, a fair level of tannin in their diet. Just naturally because they do prefer deciduous and evergreen leaves, twigs and bark to just about any other food. If I had an abundance of Black Walnut leaves, I would cautiously feed them to my goats, in moderate amounts, to supplement their normal ration.

1,000 Crops for Montana Farmers: A 1-day Workshop by Michael Pilarski, Missoula, Montana January 25
9:00 am to 4:00 pm
at The Hive, 800 South 3rd Street West (site of the Winter Public Market) in Missoula.
The workshop focus is on creating crop diversity for greater productivity on small farms. Michael Pilarski will introduce hundreds of crops including medicinal plants and Northwest native plants. Michael has been farming and researching plants since 1972 and he founded Friends of the Trees Society in 1978. His perspective incorporates agriculture, permaculture, agroforestry, ethnobotany, and ecological restoration. Bring a list of plants you are interested in. Bring your questions. The workshop will allow us to draw on the knowledge and personal experience of the participants. Everyone will go away with new ideas.

It's confirmed! Sjang Van Dal of the Netherlands is coming to the Sandpoint, ID area to give a workshop on how to build a Rocket Mass Stove and heated tub. Aug. 1 - 3, 2014.

Sjang has been teaching folks around the world how to heat their homes and use that same energy for cooking, bathing and heating water. He has led workshops in India, United Kingdom, Norway and his home country of the Netherlands. His stoves are as beautiful as they are well engineered and functional. This flyer describes the workshop and contains pricing and contact information. The workshop is for anyone who heats with wood, loves the comfort and beauty of a wood fire and wants to work 1/2 as hard to put up a winter's worth of wood. These stoves reportedly use only 1/2 of the wood that a conventional wood stove uses. This workshop is also for those who wish to learn about heating with wood in an efficient and earth-friendly way. Camping is available at the site were the stove will be built.

A designer and builder of Rocket Mass heaters may be traveling from the Netherlands to Sagle Idaho in August to do a workshop on how to build one of his stove designs.
