Hey permies, I'm starting my freshman year of high school soon. As a lab I can do some garden experiments, logging, diagrams, etc. What are some good resources that explain the chemistry of permaculture gardening? (cec, carbon stuff, minerals, nitro fixation,......stuff like that)

Nitrogen fixing or plant chemistry is the same no matter the design system you are using.

You can do a comparison of two different techniques for example:

- plot one has bare soil plot two has a nice thick straw mulch by the end of your experiment you could measure soil life, organic matter content of the soul, nutrient content of the soil, health and size if the food grown in the soil, amount of water needed, soil temperature differences

Or

- Grey water usage experiment. Control is watering the plot with water with standard laundry detergent, let's say tide, in the correct proportion as washing machine water. Plot two would use water with the correct proportion of ( now this is specific, you can order it off of  Amazon, Oasis biocompatible detergent). You can ask Oasis manufacturer of the chemistry on how that breaks down in the soil into plant nutrients, this is a certain chemistry involved.  So plot one with water and the diluted tide, plot two with water and the diluted Oasis.  No other fertilizer allowed.  At the end measure soil salt levels, soil nutrients ( NPK) standard soil test kit, any worms or soil life, and the yield how much and how big of the crop, broccoli might be good or ask Oasis

Or

- Plot one standard mono top in rows, plot two use companion planting

Etc.....
