why?
trying to share a seed-list in resource forum,
a word doc seems a strange file type to block

edit. every file type i convert this to is prohibited ? is this a bug or intentional craziness?

There is a size limit on how long a post can be. Imagine what would happen if people started attaching 300 page PDF documents.

Also, many of those extensions require special software to open/read. Not everybody has those required softwares.

Attachments were meant to images not files. For file sharing, you could put it on a dropbox account (int he public folder.) Or search for "free file hosting" online.

ok thanks. its no biggie personally .first time i've tried to offer a document here and was surprised.

to play advocate for a sec, why would that be bad? 300 pages of text is tiny in file size. and could be important info. image files are permitted and have a size limit, whats the difference?
is the concern that folks would write 300 page long diatribes as teh body of a message and post it as a txt file to circumvent post length limits? this seems silly

ahhh hm, just occurred to me, would that mean 300 pages of download previews would appear on the post? yes that'd real bad, no way to not have the preview ?
honestly i dont like the whole attachment layout with this new software at all,but ive bigger things to worry about

i'd wager 99.9% of the active membership can open all these common document formats.
meh ok, it is what it is.

what file type ARE allowed.? besides images. video?

I have to admit I haven't really thought this through much.

I like the idea of facilitating the sharing of good information. Until I read this, I thought we did allow pdf and doc files.

In the last couple of years, there has been a lot of folks that have been illegally copying stuff and posting it in all sorts of places, and I am very adamant that we NOT do that. I am a powerful advocate of respecting the author's wishes in how things are shared. And we've had too many people on permies that trying to get away with crap down this road outside of my comfort zone. So, to learn that PDF and DOC files cannot be uploaded here now seems like a perk.

I'm open to exploring ideas down this road a bit.

Currently the only files allowed are images: gif, bmp, jpg (or jpeg), png, tif (or tiff). Paul - I'll talk to you offline.

Many permies live rurally. and depend on dial-up internet access. A huge attachment could take hours to display. They would opt out of loading that entire thread.

I think pdf is currently working.

I could fiddle more and see about getting others to work, but I worry a little about bad guys uploading viruses. Plus, my host has been super cool, and my host has told me that the cost of the amount of bandwidth I use is bigger than what I pay - but he's a fan of my work, so he's been eating it. (please everybody consider evolutionhosting.com - they are awesome!)

So for other formats I kinda wonder about other solutions. Are there other places that will host files and people can link to them from here?

i think i saw a doc file here recently' thats how i noticed the change.

my thought was mostly pertaining to the board-members seed-exchange in resource forum. that it'd just be convenient if folks uploaded a text doc with their have/want list directly under that specific thread. going elsewhere (unless a direct link) just adds a step.. my list is like 40kb so space isnt a concern there, for other files i would think the size limit could be same or less than images. viruses, i guess, people can also link to a virus but i dont see that happening,do you?

in hindsight what i coulda done was simply taken a screenshot and uploaded the images of each page of my seed-list,duh..that could be an even better solution in this case..although it is nice to be able to copy/paste things you want off a list rather than retype a bunch of things.,this is getting rambley ..

google lets you share files, and i'm sure other places do have file storing/sharing, i kinda wonder though, whether the extra steps and hoopjumping to setup another account elsewhere, set rights etc, upload , and paste the link would deter folks from bothering to share whatever it was in the first place.
i'd bet we'd see many less pictures if it were not possible to up them here. all valid concerns though.
