Hello,

I'm a  home educating mum and am looking to leave the uk and get out to Portugal as soon as we are able (hopefully this summer) and begin working towards the life I dream about for myself and my son aged 8. I had planned to travel through several countries with my son, learning languages and ways of life for a year or so, learning skills and unschooling, before settling in Portugal, but the whole plandemic has made me realise that  we need to find our 'tribe' of like minded people and focus on becoming less dependant on infrastructure and at the mercy of the state asap. Although I don't feel that I am 'prepared' in the way I hoped I would feel, current events are urging me to leave the uk whilst it is still possible.

In the short term we are looking to travel Workaway style, to different areas and hope to connect with like-minded people who have already made the move to off-grid permaculture life!
I feel I have a LOT  to learn and this would be a great way to start and to be able to help to others already following their dreams. I have worked on lots of permaculture projects and my knowledge is still very patchy but I feel we can get stuck into anything with good instruction and are keen to help.
Long term I would love to find a  piece of land where I can live and grow with my son living a simple life in peace and close to nature, but  near enough to others doing the same so that we can pool skills/ knowledge/ help each other providing alternative education/ celebration. I long for the chance to create a little permaculture  garden and build a simple home of our own, where I could hopefully provide for our needs cottage business style or selling my craftwork, or working with others on their projects. We don't have a huge amount of capital but enough to buy some land.

So!
If you are in Portugal and are looking to share land or live in an area with communities that are open to others joining it would be great to hear from you and about your experiences.

I'd love to visit communities/ families on a Workaway exchange where we can help out and learn from others, so please get in touch if you would be willing to have us visit (when this is possible for us as we would be   travelling by train/ bus and that is currently not possible with lockdown).

Are there areas to avoid settling in due to the huge fire risk in some parts?

Would we be able to manage without a car?

Also any advice/ experiences with settling in Portugal, - how you go about getting temporary residency and if there are difficulties if you don't have a permanant address / employment contract, or large bank account? It would be good to know of any legal requirements before we leave our life here in the uk.

Any other suggestions or advice you would kindly like to pass on welcome!!!

Many thanks and good wishes,

Jo

I can relate for that urge of getting rid of the shackles of the system and a more fullfilling life and work with mother Nature.

I´m starting my own journey as well and I wanted to reach you and if you need any assistance I can provide you a lot of info of Portugal.

Peace be with you.

So there I was, trapped in the jungle. And at the last minute, I was saved by this tiny ad:
