Brandon, I cook on a fire every summer when I'm out on the land. You're memories are right, food does taste better and it really does not take much equipment. Build a solid 3 sided fireplace with
local stones. Old wire refrigerator or
oven shelves make excellent grills. Potatoes squash or other
roots can be roasted right in (under) a good bed of coals. Almost any heavy bottomed pot can be used over a fire but
cast iron is probably best. I tend to use an hours cooking time as a general rule of thumb, but you'll learn that with a little practice.
