I've always been excited about Open Source Ecology's Global Village Construction Set.
https://opensourceecology.org/gvcs
Though it started out with some great ideas, progress seems to have been slowing and I don't see anything at all past 2020.
Does anybody know if this project is still around?

They aren't dead, but I do think they lost their soul.  I recall following this project for a while.  It was so fascinating to me, the idea of building so many technical machines which in turn build our modern world.  At one point I was even loosely entertaining the idea of doing systems engineering / project management for them during a career transition.

I think what happened is that they lost focus, primarily due to poor leadership and weird organizational structure.

They pivoted from the very engineering-centric Global Village Construction Set (aka the machines) to the more liberal-arts-minded collaborative development and socio-economic disruptive stuff.  They bought a farm and are doing the intentional community thing:

This page from their wiki highlights their goals pivot under the "End State" section:

Hey K Eilander,
Open Source Ecology is still around... I apprenticed https://www.opensourceecology.org/ose-apprenticeship/ there in 2021 to help prototype the Seed Eco Home.

George Yacus, my experience is not that OSE has 'pivoted' to intentional community: it is still very much mission/engineering focused, maybe even to a fault. I think that from Marcin's perspective the emphasis on self-growth is critical to create a team capable of developing the GVCS. However, I won't deny that I think better organizational structure such as https://www.liberatingstructures.com/ could encourage more participation or commitment.

The best place to see updates consistently is Marcin's work log.

The GVCS is very ambitious, and I don't think there is sufficient momentum to reach it within the planned project timeline at the current rate.

I am doing what I can to continue this work, to develop a flourishing ecology of open source hardware. However, it's difficult to make progress without collaborating in-person with others dedicated to this effort. I can primarily only contribute virtually right now.

I think that some of the projects at Wheaton labs represent unfulfilled components of the GVCS, like the Willow Feeder for circular economy of 'humanure'... the RMH for heating... I prefer lumber to roundwood, but I appreciate the strategy of building with minimally processed natural materials to reduce cost/effort/energy use.

Overall, perhaps the greatest bottleneck component that is not prototyped is the induction furnace, even something like developing expertise with a small charcoal foundry could lead to forwarding the GVCS.

Looks like they've been active on social media within the last 6 months and are actively hiring for events. Reminds me of https://preciousplastic.com/ but much less organized.

Imo fabricating anything yourself will always be more expensive than repurposing something mass-produced. Like if you want a ball mill then just get a cement mixer and throw some ball bearings in, no tools or fabrication required. I think I remember early on they were focused on simpler things, but if you aspire to build a bulldozer from scratch I guess that's a good resource.

Pretty much anything on their current list I'd actually want to build myself is still in the planning stage with no information. Maybe they just need more help to move things along.

Maybe OSE does more design work than anything.  (I feel like that’s a loop I’m caught in as well)

I’m impressed by the number of “precious plastic” kits and machines available on their marketplace, and by the number of small businesses using their designs. You can even download free business plans.

I wonder what other open-source hardware has succeeded?  Arduino.  Also 3D printers like Reprap, Prusa, and Voron.

Do you want ants? Because that's how you get ants. And a tiny ads:
