Hi, all!

I can't find any information about growing ornamental grasses near fruit trees/shrubs. Prior to planting most of my figs, paw paws and raspberries, I had already established some native ornamental grasses (switch grass and river oats mostly) in the same planting area. Is this a bad idea? I'm sure there are much better companion plants that I could plant to support the fruiting species, and I plan on adding more plants this spring (herbs, borage, yarrow, bee balm, etc.), but I'm wondering if I should move the grasses elsewhere or if they'll be ok in this location, even though they may not be the most supportive.

Thanks for any advice you may have!

My vote would be to move them… I feel like “if they don’t have multiple roles to play they aren’t really part of the guild”… I guess the questions I’d be asking myself would be ‘what else would you put in that exact spot and what roles would the new life play?’

I was told to eliminate grass from around fruit trees as the shallow roots from both compete for the nutrients

Thanks for the feedback! I'll move them elsewhere, as I have many other plants I can replace them with.

If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses - Henry Ford. Tiny ad:
