Hi! I am having some trouble understanding the exact requirements for a willow feeder to work and as I have ADHD, reading all the very long forum threads is very hard for me.

I built an indoor feeder (wooden box with lid, urine diverter, bucket for poo). I understand that some sort of ventilation is required, and I can tell because it stinks already after only two uses, but I don't get it yet. I've seen some pipes just stuck into the sawdust in the "change a willow feeder bin" BB, but I guess those are for drying the lower part, not actually ventilating the toilet.

What can I do to fix this? Is there a document somewhere detailing the build?

I also am wondering - it needs to be airtight apart from that, right? The toilet seat I bought has little knobs between the seat and the ceramic (on a regular toilet) and also between the lid and the lower part. That way, there is quite a gap. Are there any airtight seats that arent made of plastic? The plastic one I had before sealed much better, but I bought bamboo this time for obvious reasons.

A stink pipe elevated high above the toilet box is required to cause a draft.
Some have small fans installed to assist the air flow.
If you seal the box too well, the draft system will not work.

Ah, okay. Does it have to go outside the room?

OMG! I hope you guys get this to work! Ever since I read the 'Humanure' book, I wanted to implement the system. But we live in a conventional house, so my husband said no!  But if it works, it would be so cool. And seeing the 'willow' candy at Wheaton Labs has released the doubt that this kinda thing can work. Check it out! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxk50Q9GbWw
