Finally got around to making this idea a reality. We found an old canoe that was heading for the dump, and repurposed it as a kind of raised
garden bed with three 5 gallon
bucket vermicompost systems.
Here’s a
video I made showing the worm canoe:
This
project is meant to be a fun and interactive demonstration of soil science, vermiculture, etc. Students can
feed their
apple cores and other food scraps to the worms in the buckets, and observe them as they digest these food scraps and spread nutrients to the surrounding soil.
I'll definitely make an update as we start to cultivate worms in this new system. Since there are 3 buckets in the canoe, we might be able to do some experimentation, possibly cultivating other detritivores (springtails?) in one of the buckets as well. We overwintered some worms in our climate-controlled aeroponics room, and some of those will be re-homed into the canoe as well as our Worm Tub (a different vermicomposting system in a bathtub, without plants. Checkout some of the videos I made last year if interested.)
This system creates numerous immersive and hands-on educational opportunities, bringing nature back into the lives of kids who are increasingly surrounded by the artificial human world, "giving back what
city and suburb have taken away".
