I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns.

As always, Toby Hemenway's book is well-written and thoroughly detailed, cited, and thoughtful. Toby starts the book with an introduction to permaculture and then starts to make his case for how a city can be green. The general format of how Toby approaches topics in this book is with a brief history of the subject of that chapter (which is quite useful to see how history has shaped our perceptions and beliefs), and then he applies the same four or five methods to each subject to explain how the needs of that chapter can be met through a permaculture lens. What I appreciated the most from the book was how Toby applied "Mission, Goals, Strategy, and Techniques" to each section. His focus on stepping back from the techniques-perspective of hsi book was especially important for getting me to see the bigger picture and how to find the right techniques for a given situation or place. The most interesting chapters for me were Chapters 8 and 9, which were about human interactions and making a community. I had not considered to think about people this way before, through the permaculture lens, and now it is a lot more interesting to figure out how to improve relationships with others and how to effectively get things done wherever I am.

I give this book 10 out of 10 acorns.

This book is one of my all-time favorite Permaculture titles, and I have read it many more times than I have read Hemenway’s Gaia’s Garden, which I also dearly love.

Since I am an urban Permie, this book initially had me at the title. However, I was surprised to find that it is not simply about how to garden with perennials on a tiny city lot, although that is a large part of it—this book is basically Hemenway’s guide to permaculturing your life. Awesome! Thinking of different aspects of life (water, energy, heat, livelihood, etc.) as interrelated systems, the author describes ways we can change these lifestyle systems of ours to make them more resilient and more compatible with the natural systems we are all part of, including the systems of the other humans around us.

I find Hemenway’s thinking to be always concise but multifaceted, his love of Permaculture to draw the reader ever further and further in, and his chapters to be intricately put together yet always remaining readable and understandable. It looks like a textbook, but The Permaculture City is not filled with academic jargon or concepts only experts could understand.

The useful charts, diagrams, and thinking tools in this book are truly worth their weight in gold. Coming away from this book, readers will have learned to think better about living anywhere, learning ways to make conscious connections to the systems and processes of daily life that so many overlook, but each of which can be expanded, enhanced, and improved with deliberate design. I really, really like this book!
