(This book I originally wrote about here but I believe the author's books deserve their own thread now!)

Read and download free: True Bird Stories from My Notebooks by Olive Thorne Miller

This AMAZING book is from 1903, I believe by the same woman who did the original "My Bookhouse" series. This book for children is her personal stories of rescue birds that she kept in her New York apartment during the winter and set free when the spring came again. It makes a fantastic read-aloud, and we are currently reading it again for the second time in less than six months. My animal-lover absolutely adores these stories, (and asked to hear a particular humorous story 3 times!), and besides learning about birds, the early 20th-century prose is definitely increasing her vocabulary as we make our way through it. 5 out of 5 stars from mother and daughter! Print out the pictures in color, if you can. They are stunning.

In Nesting Time is her earlier book of bird stories for adults that she mentions in her children's book. (I am printing it out right now and will see if it makes any sense to Miss G. If not, I am sure I will enjoy it until she grows older!)

The Children's Book of Birds by Olive Thorne Miller

As a homeschooling mother, I feel like I may have struck the motherlode with this one: a chatty children's encyclopedia of North American birds with to-die-for illustrations. Filled with stories and facts and beautiful diagrams of all kinds...I have also just printed this one out. Holy cow.
