Many metro areas are developing food forests. Atlanta's is the newest one I've heard of.  They don't just provide food for poor people. They help people learn to connect with nature and agriculture.  They soak up excess storm water and purify the water for others.  They provide havens for pollinators and other wildlife.  People from all walks of life can connect in them and see that our future moves forward when we can work together.
