I set a goal of creating a carbon negative zero dollar chicken coop.
I got close but i ended up spending $15 and with the use of a few nails and a role of paracord I'm not sure if it broke even on the carbon.

Ritted yucca if your going to process more than a few leaves ritting is the way to go. Yes it stinks.

Ran out of yucca cord so used the guts and outer wrap of paracord i had left over from a backpacking trip.

The gap u see in the roof is because the lower part swings up so ill be able to get the future nesting baskets.

It was my first time building anything like this.
What I learned.
Bamboo is AWESOME everyone with the space should plant it and not just one type i would plant large (6-4in dia), medium(3-2in dia), small(1in dis), tiny (less than 1in dia).
Yucca cord is hella strong but i could have made the cord from bamboo.
Being broke proof and having bushcraft skills really go hand in hand.

Areas where i should have researched and practiced first.
1. Lashing Skills
2. Building natrual bamboo structures.

Next up ill be weaving nesting baskets from some willow and cat tail leaves.

PS.
Instead of adding more plastic to the world by buying your kid a Rainbow Loom teach them to how to make natural cordage.
They will get the same motor skill work out and have something with a thousand more usages.

Great attempt Darnell...and thank you for documenting it for us all...

We learn as much from our failures as we do from our success, so again much thanks for sharing you insights into what you learned. There are some great books out there that could assist you in learning some skill sets that would go a long way into progressing you understanding of bamboo and lash work...One I would highly recommend, and has been with me since I was a small boy, is "Ashley's Book of Knots." Also, I would recommend tracking down Elders in your community that still weave, crochet, knit, and do hand knot work. Nothing beats working in real time with someone that has "fiber skills," of any type...the cross over in other extremes like surgical knotting and suturing to lashing a chicken coop all benefits from such experience.

Good luck, and we look forward to your next adventure,

j
