Wow that took me a minute to locate the right place to put this topic.

So I was born in Cleveland, Ohio...Have always lived in big cities. Have bounced from job to job and lived paycheck to paycheck. I am currently 46 years old and I know in all reality, if I do not make a change I will have to work till the day I die. I am so encouraged by others stories that there is hope. I believe that leaving it all behind and going off grid is the only option for me. Jeez... reading this it sounds like its not something I want to do, but in honesty it is something I have always wanted to do. So I stumbled a crossed this site Via Pauls Youtube and decided to get my education here. Any advice on where the best place to go to learn (sub-forums here) would be greatly appreciated. Looking forward to learning from ya'll and setting a goal date to get out of Kansas and hit the hills.

Ken, welcome to Permies!

You have found what is IMNSHO the best place to figure out very good things. In my signature below this post has a link to the Universal Introduction to Permies that Dave Burton put together explaining the way this place works and answering a lot of the questions newcomers have.

To your main question, I suggest the Homesteading, Growies and Wilderness forums as possible starting points in your self-education here. Myself, and some others here, liken the information available to drinking from a firehose. But patience and diligent reading are their own rewards there. Good luck on your quest and be active!

Howdy Kenneth, welcome to permies !

What kinds of things are you interested in learning?

Where do you plan on settling when you leave Kansas?

What kinds of skills do you already have?

I would love to Move either to Montana or Colorado, Love the Mountain scenery. I have skills in construction, gardening, fishing. Don't get me wrong I do know at the most, I know very little. I definitely want to learn to be off the grid and self sufficient. Learning how to collect water, hunt and trap as well as taking care of my own live stock and gardening. I know I am missing a bunch. Learning is going to be the easy part, getting the funds to get it off the ground....Thats a whole nother story. Have to start putting my money to work for me FAST.

Thanks for asking and welcoming me, I appreciate it.

Hi Kenneth, glad to hear you've found your way to permies. Well for sure you'll find tons of information on these forums. Permies is a big community where you will be able to read of others experiences, share yours, and search for specific solutions quickly.
Permies though is not a quick reference site, just for taking, its a growing community where we hang around delve into forums and discuss many issues, it for sharing. From what I see you have started finding your way and met other fellow permies and getting into its spirit. Great!
I'd like to suggest you even visit the regional forum: regional where you'll be able to catch on people and projects, or events that may happen where you live or where you want to go and live. Its always nice to know if someone else in your area may be trying out your same ideas. Check it out
Then of course I'd like to suggest two threads that have helped me a lot: universal welcome
and
how permies works

They'll give you an overview of this fertile community, I've been around some time but still haven't hit all the forums on permies. Hope to see you around soon, sharing your knowledge and desires.
Again welcome!
