I have a Whirlpool HE top-loader that drains out to a greywater garden only, and it's started making the clothes smell like dirty laundry water.  We've tried cleaning it in the "clean cycle" with our greywater-friendly soap to no avail.

I've considered using Affresh and capturing the water in a tub, which I could then dispose of, but the manual says the clean cycle uses more water than a normal cycle.  Capturing & disposing of the affresh water doesn't seem practical.

Has anybody figured out a way to clean HE washers that are connected to a greywater-only system?

Have you tried using vinegar? Regular cheap grocery store vinegar, about two cups and run it in the "cleaning" cycle. I don't remeber where I read it. I use vinegar for a lot of cleaning jobs.

I haven't tried that.  Do you think that would dilute the vinegar enough so that it wouldn't kill the plants?

No idea. I can't have a grey water system where I am.

From everything I have read (please do your own research though) vinegar is only effective as a topical killer. Does not harm the roots of plants. So a graywater system (if it did not wet the leaves of the plants in it service area) would be safe to distribute diluted vinegar water.

I am going down to the lab. Do NOT let anyone in. Not even this tiny ad:
