Teaching Permaculture to Youth: A Webinar for Educators, Facilitators, Organizers, and Families

Hosted by PAN with the generous sponsorship of Johnnys Seeds, based in Maine.

Join us for a conversation about teaching Permaculture Design, food production, and ecological literacy to children and young adults! Learn how two northeast educators are providing youth with tools to create positive change in their communities, develop a sense of empowerment, and connect deeper with food and nature.

Monica Ibacache is the Founder and Executive Director of Beyond Organic Design (BOD) (http://www.beyondorganicdesign.org/), an urban educational nonprofit organization based in NYC dedicated to sustainability and permaculture education for children in order to prepare them to inherit the earth in the face of climate disruption. Monica’s work focuses on teaching students how to design and create ecologically diverse environments in their playgrounds, gardens, and campgrounds. Monica is also the President of the Permaculture Institute of North America (https://pina.in/).

Stephanie Aubert is the Director of Program Development at Grow Nashua (www.grownashua.org) where she teaches grades K-5 and the founder of Grasshoppers Landing (www.facebook.com/GrasshoppersLanding), a regenerative farm and forest which seeks to nourish creativity and inspire innovation in agriculture. She is passionate about ecological literacy and education and social justice.

*Webinars are FREE to PAN members and $10-50 (sliding scale payment) for non-PAN members. To register for this webinar, please visit http://northeastpermaculture.org/webinar/

James Landreth wrote:I would go with any but the first, simply because it invites partisan dialogue, which I would shy away from. Maybe choose "The Edge is where the action is." You could tie that theme into so many workshops and talks, including things like hedgerows and grassroots movements

Thank you for the input, James!
I have always found that soil pH between 6.0 and 7.0 is safe for vegetable gardens.

I agree that the coir could be tying up nitrogen.

I also agree that it would be safe to add quite a bit more compost, and perhaps a source of minerals (source might depend on where you are located).

Best of luck next growing season! If chemical residues are still present, things will be sure to improve :)

To one and all!

The organizers of the 2020 Northeast Permaculture Convergence are trying to assign a slogan to the event! Can you help us come up with ideas?

Contenders thus far:

“Making Permaculture Great Again!”

"Return of the Permies"

"Permaculture strikes back"

"The edge is where the action is"

Any ideas out there??

The Permaculture Association of the Northeast (PAN), with the help of local collaborators, are bringing back the Northeast Permaculture Convergence in 2020!

The event website is now LIVE! Check out https://northeastconvergence.wordpress.com/ for more details as they emerge.

The event organizers are also in search of a volunteer coordinator for the event. The tasks associated with the position would be done remotely aside from the event itself (July 24-26, 2020 at D Acres Organic Farm and Homestead in Dorchester New Hampshire).

To get involved, reach out to Steph at plantresilience@gmail.com

The Northeast Convergence we know and love is coming back in 2020, and the
Permaculture Association of the Northeast (PAN) is gearing up to begin
planning!

2019 Northeast Permaculture Convergence Planning Retreat – October 4-6, 2019

The Northeast Permaculture Convergence has deep roots in our region as a place
where permaculture practitioners (and our friends from Transition groups,
herbalists, primitive skills/earth awareness circles, food systems advocates,
and other affinity groups) come together to build capacity, gain new skills,
celebrate, and knit together our amazing regional permaculture network
further.

The last convergence was held in 2014 in Unity, Maine and the PAN
board is thinking the time is RIPE to plan for a 2020 event. This event takes
a community to prepare for it, requiring many hands and hearts coming together
in cooperation. Whether your passion is around organizing and planning for
local, organically grown meals, live music, vendors, speakers, infrastructure,
art, kids activities, marketing, etc. we need it all!

JOIN US for our first planning weekend in New Hampshire that will lay the groundwork for the
following year in anticipation of a summery 2020 convergence! If you’re
enthusiastic, hard working, reliable, and committed to making this an amazing
event, we encourage you to fill out an application form!

Travis - wow how did I miss this? That is way too cool. .I have to see about checking out "Pioneer Quest".

Rock the Flock sounds awesome as well. Did it already take place? If so, I bet it was a smash!
