I was watching some videos from takota Coen. He said he only breeds gilts and it looks like they are bred once a year (just judging from the videos)
Does anyone have insight into how his pig breeding system works?
What do you do about boars? They don't seem to be penned together (and for obvious reasons-breeding) however having one boar by himself for most of the year seems pretty mean as they like company. Pick a new breeder from the new litter and hope he breeds at 9 months old? Line breeding an issue then?

Would you be breeding the 9 month old pigs (born in March breeding December) or waiting until they are a year and 9 months old?

The reason we are want to go this route is piglets in minus 40 doesn't work for us. We don't like it the pigs dont like it so we want to move away from housing sows and boars together and work on quickly breeding for certain traits.

I'm curious if anyone has built a heated barn area with some sort of mass heater? We are trying to move away from electric sources of heat in the winter months (-40 frequently) for water and baby animals and eventually so we can milk in the winter. I had an idea that using a wood stove, rocket stove or something along those lines placed in the center of a building with lots of insulation would allow us to keep everything from freezing without power
If anyone has any insight or ideas I would love to hear them!
