Biography
I’m a life long gardener…just finished my third year of a large 120’x80’ garden here outside of Asheville NC. I work toward being more food self-sustaining. I learned so much these first three years. Some things didn’t grow at all, some grew part of the season, some were prolific. I successfully grew potatoes & sweet potatoes this year! I learned about the insect pests here, the fungi that created problems for some plants, learned better ways to manage weeds, to irrigate. This year I focused on canning apples from our 5 old organic trees as well as the wild blackberries & elderberries I harvested! Chose to freeze pumpkin pulp.
I also made a large hugelcultur berm!
Next year I’m going to learn composting, vermicomposting, compost tea making and I going to bake bread again!

Honestly…Ive gotten tired of managing my tomato plants so this year I planted them next to a sturdy cattle panel. I’m just supporting the branches by propping them up through the openings and then letting them fall where they’re gonna fall. So far all are doing just fine w minimal fuss!

We’re in a flood plane so our soil here in Eastern North Carolina is pretty sandy w some degree of organic matter. (We lost a lot of our good top soil in Helene 😢)
I do chop & drop, amend the soil w compost, leaves, wood chips & worm castings. And while I don’t have a compost pile I bury a lot of our eggshells, veg & fruit scraps. This really helps.
When planting seeds or starts I always add good quality soil directly on them. And in areas of the garden I’m not planting this year I add a nice layer of wood chips & wood chip my garden pathways. I also like to loosen the soil w a broad fork, getting water & nutrients down deeper.
Keep at it and your soil will improve!

My system is simple: 2 large rain barrels that catch roof water. I attach a hose & water garden patches around the house. But my favorite feature is these are wonderful hand & veggie wash stations. I keep a bucket under each spigot.

Our septic guys said to just flush the contents of a big box of baking soda down the toilet.

Yes! I love this method! I’ve dried apples from our trees in my car. No bugs. No mess!
Y’all have inspired me to dehydrate other garden goodies!

My favorite snacks:
Cheese
Nuts
Rice cake w cashew butter & honey (yum)
A handful of granola

Right now I’m enjoying frozen leftovers of yesterday’s smoothie w homegrown strawberries, banana, pineapple, yogurt & a teeny bit of grape juice
