Pig's ears were super popular a while back. The dog I had prior to the one I have now would salivate like crazy just by saying the word "pigs ear"..... he loved it.
I use a kong now filled with peanut butter for this one and a knotted robe that he loves to chew.... we go for 1 hr walk in the morning and 1 hr in the evening.... he doesnt handle well to be tied up or locked as is high energy.... his outdoor area is full of holes and has broken several chains despite his small size.... so heaps of exercise are a must.

The only time any of my dogs have had problems with rawhide is if the wrong size or shape for them. The rolled shapes can be a problem that way. My big dog got a piece of pencil-width rawhide roll wedged across the roof of his mouth once, and it was distressing to him and hard to pry out. Then when he had a larger baton-sized roll he swallowed the last inch-long nub whole and it made him throw up. Never had any problems with the flat squares, though. Particularly now they make them with perforations.

there is no secret that when people dont want to sell their properties, some fire "motivates" them to do so, forcing them to sell for pennies. Nothing new.

Areas covered in eucaliptus or large "mono cultures" bring pesticides that become airborn (ie Santarem, leiria for monocultures and Castelo branco area as part of the fire belt of eucaliptus plantations)

Much more expensive is Algarve..... Alentejo is an up and coming area, yet very infra developed and under populated, pesticide free...
I do agree with you there is land to be found cheaper, and you will find many expats flocking there..... i chose this area to avoid investing and losing all to fire.

I was under the impression you wanted to buy land and allow people to move in with their own home (bungalow or similar) i didnt get the impression you needed multiple ruins in one piece of land. Maybe you will find it. In Spain there are abandoned towns which might be cheaper and more convenient perhaps.

then there are much much bigger lands available too.... so if your pocket is deep, this area might tickle your curiosity.
Mind the "fire belt" area in Portugal and double check "mining projects" ..... terrible "accidental fires" that devastated the THEN prime coastal areas (last summer).... It reminded me of Lahaina somehow...

edit  for your reference this one is also one of my close by "neighbours" selling their property. This one is awesome if you have the cash to splash. they were called "restautante dos avestruces" it was a restaurant i am told but has been shut a few years since the "RONA"

Despite the keen interest of the potential buyers it would seem their conditional sale of their property had not yet come to fruition.... so it is just fair to update this post and see what happens.  

I am open to long term rent, sale or land share.
Located by the biggest lake in western Europe away from the fire belt or "mining" prospect areas that have recently triggered so many "accidental fires".

All in all, a quiet, nature filled, simple living area, perfect for couples.

Here is just me and my 4 legged fur baby in rural inland Portugal. Has a wonderful lake and fresh water beaches but is not a touristy spot or expat place, locals here are 65+ and the most entertaining thing to do is to listen to the birds chirp. No community or hang out spots with a tribe unless you go spend some time down the bar with the granpas.😁

2 hr drive from Lisbon.

Asuncion for what i gather is a hot spot for anglo-expats (aka higher prices and much applied so called "gringo tax")

I hear Encarnacion is perhaps a better option? (Argentinian, Brazilian, latino crowd, aka "cheaper", more peaceful, but also less entertainment options)

I wonder what you meant by "mixed feelings"? As a developing nation for sure it has a number of challenges.... have you lived in places like that before? Do you speak the local language? (usually makes you less of a target)

How interesting you mention oaks.
I was walking my dog yesterday and I noticed an increasing number of oak trees are dying in my area for no apparent reason. Not just one or 2 or 4..... I spotted a dozen or more that  were relatively big trees all brown, broken and brown or "browing" at the crown.... other surrounding trees looked fine....
I approached one of them and noticed the leaves had some "hard lumps" that were not typical from the leaf, like little pimples.
Anybody has any idea what that is?

I wonder if
Moringa
Bread fruit
would grow in the South of Portugal?? 🤔
