I’ve had good luck mixing fast growers with slow and steady ones, so I’m never staring at an empty bed. Stuff like beans or greens can fill gaps while the longer haul crops bulk up. I also started tucking perennials along fence lines to save space for the big calorie crops. If you’re thinking root cellar, even a half-buried bin or old fridge can bridge the gap until you build a full setup.
I’ve had good luck thinning oil paint with plain linseed oil and then cutting the slick feel by mixing in a pinch of chalk or marble dust. It keeps the color from looking heavy and dries a bit faster. I usually wipe it on, wait a couple minutes, then buff off the extra so the grain still shows. Trying small test spots on scrap wood saved me from a few color surprises.
