No matter how much one scrounges and reuses things, sometimes there are items you can only get from a hardware store. Im writing to share this method so that hopefully some people can save some money!
My closest store is lowes, so that is the method I know. I am pretty sure a similar method works at Home Depot. Small hardware stores most likely dont have this ability.
So every time I go to lowes I am able to save 15-30% off of any sale/ clearance/ floor model price. This is not hyperbole!
To do it takes a bit of pre work which can all be done on your phone or ipad or computer if thsts what you are using
To get the discount you are going to use discounted
gift cards, and special coupons.

1) First go to www.raise.com and create an account. If you use this link instead you can get $5 off of your first order, and I will also for inviting you :https://geta.raise.com/BALDEGHI1037
2) make sure you subscribe to their email list. Raise has discounts throughout the month on different
gift card categories. Sometimes it might be clothing, other times its automotive etc. and a couple of times a month it is everything on the site. Lowes gift
cards are normally discounted 3% from face value. During these extra promotions, the discount goes up to 9 or 10%. Once those promotions come up, snag gift certificates for 10% off. They will sit in your account until you use them. There is an app for phone which will allow you to pull them up at will in the store. They can scan them right off the phone. [ one thing to note is that the gift certificates take 1-2 hours after ordering to show up in your account]
3) the other half of this process is to get coupons for lowes on ebay. Again, you can do this all from your phone. Create an account on ebay and search for lowes coupons. There are three coupons available-
a) $20 off of $100
b) $10 off of $50
c) 10% off
4) do some math based on what your purchase is and order the coupons that will save you the most $. Typically each coupon runs roughly $1 or less. Ive seen them sold individually, in threes and in 5 packs. When you order them, they show up in your email within 5 minutes - so if you save payment info when you set up the account, you can order them in the store once you see whats in your cart.
If your order can be broken down into $50 or $100 chunks you will save the most money with this method. If its one big thing like an appliance, you might be better off with the 10% coupon instead of the others.
Example—
Here is an example from when we started doing this to retrofit our basement - we were purchasing insulation and adhesive to mount the insulation panels to the wall ( im going to use rounded numbers for ease)
Insulation panels -$30 each
Adhesive - $4 each
3 panels @$30 each = $90
3 adhesives @ $4 = $12
Total = $102
Purchased giftcards at 9% off face value
Used $20 off of $100 coupon purchased for $1
Total paid $102 -$20 = $82
$82*0.91= $74.62 (plus $1 for the coupon)
