Pruning dwarf pines (Pinus mugo)?

Over the years, my dwarf pines (Pinus mugo) grew to about 10 ft (3 m) without any pruning. I need them to be half the size or less. I read here to trim only the new growth, but that will not reduce the size of the tree.

What happens when I shape the tree to the size I want?
