Weve been considering trying to get some land in north idaho or west montana and was wondering how much of a concern wild fires are in the area, and if there are ways to protect property from such events using permaculture.

Shawn,

Wildfires will consume ladder fuels on the ground. So by limbing up trees, falling standing dead and thinning out some scrub brush you will start to see a clearer forest floor. This will reduce fire danger. As a perk, the collected fuels will now be your starting point to collect, stack and groom for hugel beds. Perhaps once you have selected your build site, you could start by constructing beds on the outer perimeter and planting willows, cotton woods, and aspens all of which would thwart an approaching ground fire. From there work in to the build site, building edible hugel beds for years to come. I presently have 160 acres in west MT, and that last few months have been sawing standing dead for future beds. Good luck!

No holds barred. And no bars holed. Except this tiny ad:
Heat your home with the twigs that naturally fall of the trees in your yard
