I have been using an old piece of plywood to kill off some morning glory weeds. I leave the board for about 3 weeks, then flip it over to the adjoining spot. Each time I flip it, mice have built nests and tunnels under the entire board:

It occurred to me that this is almost like a chicken tractor, although the dirt is probably not scratched up as much as chickens would do. But I bet the mice ate all the seeds under there, and did some fertilizing.
So if you have mice but not chickens, you can put them to work for you, with the aid of a sheet of plywood.
