Part of our property line runs through an old Christmas tree farm with 30 foot trees closely packed together with many dead ones interspersed. I've begun cutting some down and letting light in on the soggy, dead, acidic looking soil. My original plan was to just open it up to grass growth as part of the pasture for grazing animals. But now I think it might be better for running a pig paddock though there. But I'd like to get the soil growing with something regards.
I recall Paul Wheaten saying that things to help rebuild the land after years of timber farm abuse was to plant Mullen. Not sure how my cows and pigs would react to the herb though.
I'm interested in what folks here would do first when presented with such a piece of land?
