Let me edit this:

Affirmative... using good quality (preferably home-did) compost or earth worm castings, as well consistently building organic matter have been my approach. Incorporating clays/rock dusts (glacial, volcanic) into the soil will also increase CEC... Though I don't have the ability to test CEC, the plants certainly speak for themselves compared to the controls.
