Hey there,

I've seen this post discussing Paul's suggestions of pigs to seal a leaking dam. I have a friend whose geese sealed a new smallish pond over the space of a year, but I'm interested to know if pretty much any animal's manure/weight are able to seal a pond, or other considerations...

I'm guessing my rabbits aren't going to do such a good job of compaction... but how about horses/cattle/goats/chickens even?....

Also: does the steepness of the sides of the dam make an impact there? I'm imagining few cattle wanting to stand on the side of a steep slope to do their thing... Thanks for your time.

My very limited experience is that cows are terrible with ponds which makes me hesitant to let them even near a pond. My opinion might be biased however because my experience is as follows:
Over the course of a few summers of my childhood I watched about a dozen cows completely ruin my favorite swimming/fishing spot on a farm belonging to a family friend who we often visited. The banks were all eroded and it went from 8 ft of water to 4 ft of water and 4 ft of mud. All the surrounding vegetation was destroyed.
I can see how cows could seal an area which would later fill with water.
But can a number of cows be given access to a pond without destroying it?
