so, i was wondering if there are any restrictions about what makes up mulch.
what is your definition of mulch?
does it have to be a certain size? (do i have to shred it all)
does it have to be a certain material?
whats the most random mulch related fact or hypothesis you know of?
I forage for food, and just recently found out about this no till shin dig. after putting in a few hours of research, im open to believing in its values. so the other day i went out and went ham on a patch of ambrosia trifida.
there is this big patch, like maybe an acre or so of 10 foot tall ragweed. so after an hour, i cleared out a sizable semi circle, using all the ragweed as mulch. that was yesterday. i have made some seed bombs with some random flower mix, and today i am going to go bomb the place and see what comes of it.
thats what got me thinking about mulch today. i saw this youtube
video of this dude explaining how he mulches, and it basically looked like most anything can be a mulching candidate.
so, i think ill
answer my own questions with my own impressions,
i think mulch is anything that forms a cover layer over the soil and later decays into it.
i do not think the size matters that much, although i assume the smaller the pieces the faster the decay.
from what i understand there are some materials such as fresh
wood that soak up nitrogen from the soil, but in the long run will release said nitrogen back into the soil.
i dont know many random mulch facts, but i do know that i did not mulch my garden 2 years ago, and it was one of the biggest
gardening related mistakes i have ever made.
thanks
