I can't say for sure because we eat out of the gardens, use the produce for trade, then sell or donate the rest. But I have about 2 acres planted in "garden crops". I have a lot more land planted in what I'd call non-garden crops (buckwheat, rice, feed corn, oats, wheat, mangels, fodder carrots, taro, yacon, gourds, etc) and permaculture beds for perennials (tropical fruits, herbs, certain greens and long living veggies). The non-garden crops don't require the same attention and work of the food garden crops. I keep the two type gardens separate so that I can more effectively get work done. I do this farm by myself so I have to keep a fairly efficient system going.
2 acres of intensive food garden is what I can handle under my present system. I get plenty of excess out of it for selling.
It's never too late to start! I retired to homestead on the slopes of Mauna Loa, an active volcano. I relate snippets of my endeavor on my blog : www.kaufarmer.blogspot.com
