The Medicinal Herb Grower by Richo Cech
7 out of 10
"The Medicinal Herb Grower": This is a great book by our friends at Horizon Herbs. While geared towards herb culture the information would be useful for any
perennial / annual
polyculture system. While most of the information is basic to organic horticulture Mr. Cech illustrates with personal anecdotes and experiences. One story involves healing a goat stripped Cedar of Lebanon with Comfrey. My favorite story sheds light on how humans living in harmony with nature are beneficial to the planet. While working as an archeologist at a 7000 year old site in Illinois Mr. Cech saw that the strata formed during times of human settlement was dark and full of organic matter even after thousands of years. The strata from times without human settlement paler in comparison. Much to the chagrin of the site director he successfully grows watermelons in the sifted millennia old soil.
This book has good advice on seed starting and selection, soil development, polyculture, greenhouses, hybrids vs. wild plants, tortugas, forest
gardening. I think beginners and experts would gain something from this dandy little tome. I would rate this book at 7 out of 10. He does advocate the input of organic matter from the tropics, but we could fix that !
