An amusing observation from a permie wannabe.

Today I was searching my place for some greens in places I didn't want them. I wanted to get them to feed my compost pile. I found some grass that was creeping back into an area I had removed it from and started pulling. I made sure to get out all the grass by the roots, but left the dandelions, cats ear, and mallow roots; I may want those later for something. It's pretty much the opposite of everything I ever knew.

The 10 year old in me, still bitter about trying to pull taproots from grass and barkdust alike, quietly told my mom to stick it.

Funny!

My first paying job as a little kid was digging out dandelion from my mom's lawn around the house. Now here I am, retired, planting dandelion in my garden. What a turnabout!

So today I was out in my front yard trying to clean up some overgrowth to reel in the NMS (neighbor meltdown syndrome) and I was pulling some vetch from around some garlic stalks. The vetch had wrapped itself around the garlic, some peas nearby, reached up for some chives on a higher terrace, as well as tying itself to some other plants that weren't part of my design.

I smiled as I realized the extent of this plant's desire to stay put and affectionately said, "you clever little bastard." I now like the weeds, even the ones I have to pull (except for grass, which I currently respect and will probably like once again when I battle it to an equilibrium).

You permies are turning me into a big softie. If I'm not careful I'm going to start crying at Disney movies. Not because of the story line, but because of the excessive energy used to run their parks.

Don't go into the long grass, or the tiny ads will get you.
