Heya. I've been at wikipedia and editing the pages for some vaccinium plants but then i found out about sections. Now I found it easy to understand species but am I wrong in that the species Vaccinium myrtillus and section Vaccinium sect. myrtillus are both different things but they are the scientific names with also the same common names? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium_myrtillus https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilberry

As I recall 'section' is not a formal taxonomic rank but used as a sub-grouping within a genus.
So Vaccinium sect. myrtillus would group several species similar to Vaccinium myrtillus

My botany prof, Sam VanderKloet (sadly deceased) was a world expert on Vaccinium.

This Wikipedia say that:

Vaccinium (/vækˈsɪniəm/ vak-SIN-ee-əm)[3] is a common and widespread genus of shrubs or dwarf shrubs in the heath family (Ericaceae).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaccinium

It is good to learn about families of plant and the different families of plants, the different variations in that family, and the different Subgenus.

This is all in the realm of the wonderful world of plants.

I'll second what Douglas said. A section is a group of closer-related species within a genus, usually named after the most common, well-known or otherwise most prominent species. So section Myrtillus is a group of species closely related to Vaccinium myrtillus. Sometimes this coincides with a shared common name (many of the species in section Myrtillus are called bilberries), and sometimes it does not. Also, to add to the confusion, it's not always clear where the boundaries between different sections should be, and there often seems to be differing opinions among botanists. Hope this helps.

Oh, and welcome to Permies!
