Salmon Local Foods Group is recruiting 3 Full-time VISTA Volunteers to work on expanding the local foods network in Lemhi County, Idaho.
A team of 3 VISTA members will be working together in the community of Salmon, Idaho and the surrounding rural communities to implement programming on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group's action plan. Members will work together to enhance and build capacity in the work that the Salmon Local Foods Group collaborative has been doing for more than 5 years; making local foods in our area available to all residents, regardless of socioeconomic status, making agriculture microenterprises a more equitable business venture, and generally educating the public about growing, buying, cooking, and preserving nutritious foods that are available from local sources.
Position 1.) Fruit & Produce Gleaning Project Coordinator
This VISTA member will be responsible primarily for reviving Lemhi County’s Fruit & Produce Gleaning Project as well as all associated education and outreach related to this project. This VISTA member will also assist with other projects related to the Salmon Local Foods Group Vision & Action Plan as needed.
Positions 2 & 3.) Hunger Mitigation/Local Food Education & Outreach Coordinators
These two Vista Members will be responsible primarily for education and outreach throughout Lemhi County, Idaho on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group’s Vision and Action Plan. This position would be working closely with other VISTA team members to coordinate educational workshops, forums, and training sessions as well as assisting with other projects related to the Salmon Local Foods Group Vision & Action Plan. This particular VISTA member will work closely with Salmon Local Foods Group as well as other VISTA members on a team within the community of Salmon, Idaho to implement nutrition and sustainable agriculture education & outreach, coordinate technical training(s), and host forums on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group’s action plan. This member will tie together community partners in an effort to mitigate hunger among low-income families, work to bolster sustainable agriculture within the community, and educate about food safety and value-added processing regulations. Additionally, this VISTA member will work to strengthen ties between local foods producers and area restaurants and retail outlets.

VISTA member benefits: Monthly living allowance ($928) gross Health care benefits Personal and sick leave Educational award ($5,550) or stipend ($1,500) at end of service Student loan payments may be deferred during service Educational award may be used to pay student loan.
VISTA member commitment: VISTA member commit to serve on a full-time basis (40 hours/week) for at least 1 year. Must be 18 years of age US citizen or permanent U.S. resident May not be employed outside of VISTA work May take limited college courses while volunteering Attend PSO training (required to be a VISTA volunteer) August 25-28, 2014. Expenses are paid
Hours: 40 hours/week – may involve some weekends and nights One year commitment
Minimum qualifications:
Must be 18 years or older
Valid driver’s license
Ability to pass background check
Computer literacy
Strong communication skills
Interest in local foods, sustainable agriculture and mitigation of food insecurity
Desired qualifications:
Experience with volunteer coordination and event planning
Ability to utilize Microsoft Word, Excel, Publisher and Power Point
Team player
Self-starter and ability to complete tasks without close supervision
