Hey guys-- I'm interested in joining the Lake Skinner crew! (Emily and Laurie) Is there space at sites 119 and 120 still or should I book another site? I don't have much camping gear besides my tent but would be happy to contribute food for group meals!

Emma, I saw that campsites were max capacity 6 on here but when I looked into booking one I found that it was limited to two cars two pets and two tents as well so I'm betting 119 and 120 are full because of the tents. Once everyone pairs off here we should organize skinner specific rideshares and meal planning. There will be a small army of us on site it seems and lots of room to camp together if everyone so chooses.

It's about an hour drive each way (although I am not a regular commuter and I plan on allowing a bit more time).

We live in Ocean Beach and there is a local, organic cooperative http://obpeoplesfood.coop

I have reservations at Indian oaks for a campsite but seeing that everyone is going to Skinner lakes I will try to resurve another site if needed. We are driving in Tuesday and leaving out Monday morning early.
The reservation office is closed till Monday so we have a little time.
It will be my wife and myself and we could shuttle 2 more back and forth.

Late to see this. I'm really excited about the conference. My partner and I live in the Inland Empire and would very much like to camp, rather than drive daily.
Are there any spots left in the spaces (119 and 120) that were reserved? Or has anyone else got room for two paying friends at their site?
Thanks and HELLO! (this is my first post here )

I just pulled this off of their website FAQ. I don't know how this affects everyone's decisions.

Q: Are there any exceptions to the 2-vehicle/2 tent maximum
A: There are no exceptions to the 2-vehicle maximum. We do not have a tent maximum (outside of the six-person per site maximum); however, all tents and vehicles must remain within the campsite boundary and no tents are allowed on the grass.

http://www.rivcoparks.org/parks/lake-skinner/lake-skinner-faq/

I also checked out http://www.rivcoparks.org/parks/lake-skinner/fees/ and it seems to me that we could probably get a group rate for the 6+ sites its looking like we will be renting.

Start: John Wayne Airport
18601 Airport Way, Santa Ana, CA 92707
End Lake Skinner County Park
37701 Warren Rd, Winchester, CA 92596
When 3/11/14 after 3:00pm
Cost $13.75 (vs. $44.70 driving)
Duration 4 hours 7 mins total

Above is a simple transit link between SNA airport and Hemet Valley Mall...Winchester and Auld, just a wee 8 mile hike from Skinner. Enter the data in Google maps and click the little bus icon. Will there be anyone on site around 8 pm on the 11th who could grab a fellow from the bus stop?

Also, if anyone is passing Santa Ana around that time and would be able to rideshare to camp, I'm still quite keen on it. It just looked like the timing was awkward for most folks.

See you kids at camp!

Okey-dokey. Well, turns out we can't go camping (sadface)... We'll be driving down daily from Riverside - couldn't organize care for the critters while gone.
We'd still love to hang out with the camping people, though, if there are hangouts to be joined at Lake Skinner or elsewhere.
If you see this face (pink shock on top is gone, though still peeks out from underneath) PLEASE SAY HI!!!

What's the current status on the Skinner camping situation? I'm looking at Amtrak to Oceanside 9pm the 12th, and haven't found any good options for transportation and a place to crash. A rental car for $450 at the Amtrak terminal sounds less than thrilling.

For anyone still looking for housing, there is another thread where someone is looking for housing for 2: https://permies.com/t/32914/southwest-usa/Auxiliary-Permie-Houses

I used VRBO.com, FlipKey.com, AirBnB, and a couple of others to find a place. There probably won't be much left, and certainly very little at any kind of a budget price, but it may be worth a look in case there have been cancellations.

Some options I considered were:
VRBO:
#348472 Mark, minutes away from Pechanga 4 bedroom/3 bath (1King,3Queen,3 full baths) 8 max capacity (I asked him, and absolutely no more) 5 nights (12-17) = $1545 Deposit: $500
#480724 "Panoramic Views/3 Acres/Walk to Wineries! Ave. $240 Nightly, Weekly $1300"; 20 min drive to Pechanga
4 Bed/2bath 8 person capacity Nightly rate $210-275 5 nights (12-17)= $1545.50 Deposit $200
#365547 Anza House 4/2 (1K,2Q,2twin,1portable) capacity 10 nightly $265-295 11 min drive 5 nights (12-17)= $1709 Deposit: $300 guests >8 $15+tax ea, extra BR $40+tax
#319632 "Beautiful Estate Overlooking Vineyards - Special Rate" 4bed/3bath capacity 11 Nightly $345 17 min 5 nights (12-17)$1895 Deposit: $500

Air BnB
https://www.airbnb.ca/rooms/403170 "Avocado house" 1bed/1bath capacity 2 22 min drive 5 nights (12-17) = $499

FlipKey
#p436341 Seclusive pool getaway 3bed/3bath capacity 6 5 nights (12-17) =$1371 deposit: $383

No idea if these are still available but if it saves anyone legwork that's already been done, all the better!

Good luck.

What is going on with the Lake Skinner camping? I just reserved site 122. Not wanting to intrude, but would like to be near other Permies if possible. Looking forward to meeting lots of awesome people!

Joshua and Rebecca,

Any read on whether there's open space for another tent in the permies zone? Also, any info on what the spots in the 500 number ranger are all about? It seems like they're probably the "primitive" spots, but the reservation list uses different terminology, and I was on hold with the reservation office for about half an hour before giving up. If there's room for a tent, and I end up not bringing a car, it might be nice to join forces with someone rather than go rogue in the 500s.

Sorry, I didn't make our reservation so I didn't speak to anyone at the campsite about the different spots. We are at our limit with two tents and two cars. Maybe try calling right when they open so that you aren't on hold for so long?? Good luck.

I do not know about the 500's.

So far I'm the only one in Site 122, so you can join me. I made my reservation online and there were a few other spots available. I'm arriving sometime on 3/12 and checking out on 3/16. If you want to stay until Monday in Site 122 you may want to reserve it for Sunday night or maybe another site will have room Monday night. I'm staying for the whole conference, just heading to a nearby town afterwards.

Hi all,
Sorry I'm waiting until the last minute. I'm interested in camping, and it would be great to be around some permies, so it sound like Lake Skinner is the best option. It's just me in one car (unless anyone is interested in carpooling and passing through Klamath Falls, OR?). Joshua, do you still have a spot in your site? If not, site 123 is currently available, so I can reserve that. In which case there would be room for another car to join me.
I know I shouldn't have waited until the last minute, but my plans were up in the air until just now. I plan on staying the 12-17 (Wednesday night-Monday morning). Hope to hear from someone soon!

Well, I went ahead and got another site. If anyone else is looking for last minute accommodations feel free to come stay with me (one car and 5 people max). I'm right across from the main group, site 145. See everyone there!

Another last minute guy.... I'm needing a place to stay. Haven't thought about camping until just reading this, so I'm glad I found it. It's just me, and I'll be driving in from Arizona. Debating on taking my car or my suburban. Since sharing a camp site is so much cheaper, I might bring the Suburban and then I can bring more gear to make it comfortable - like extra coolers for keeping food, some extra cast iron pans, etc. And I'll have room for hauling 5 extra people on the commute.

Hi Enrique,
It looks like my site will have 2 vehicles, though likely fewer than 6 people. I think the limiting factor for most of the sites is the 2 car limit, not the 6 people limit. If we could figure a place to park cars, even for a small fee, that would end up saving money overall, as we could fit more people in the site. If we can figure out the vehicle situation there should be plenty room.

thanks derrick, i am in LA now. I am going to pack my car and be in the temecula area in the afternoon. i can be reached at three0five 30six8foursixeight

i am all for parking my car somewhere else, my only concern is it either being towed away at the casino or broken into somewhere. I'm sure that the situation will work out though.

Thank you to all who camped at Lake Skinner. I especially want to thank Derick Greenly for starting this thread. Just trying to get a place to stay opened it up for all of us to get together. The conference was amazing, but was so much richer because of all the people who attended, but even more so for the people who stood around that campfire and shared thoughts, ideas, and dreams. I hope I can stay in touch will all of you awesome people. Now it is time for us to do epic stuff!

Lake Skinner Camping Crew! I'm so grateful to have met and spent time with you all. I can't wait to receive all of Emily's audio recordings of the event. I have all my notes, pictures, and audio recordings clouded to my google drive. So if any of you from Lake Skinner want access to them, I can easily share those files with you.
