Is there a trick to harvesting carrots? I tried to pull a couple out of the garden a few days ago and the green stalks came right off! I got into the dirt with my fingers and pulled hard and the body broke in half. Is there a better way to do this?

Also, how can you tell when a pumpkin is done? When the green completely turns to orange?
