i have been beeting my head in trying to figure out a no cost (not gas or electric or anything i would have to pay for) way of heating a space the size of a queen size bed thats the size of my tear drop sleeping area i want to build some kind of rocket stove for it it hold heat very well so it will not take much at all but i cant seem to wrap my mind around it on how to make it small like i want i figured the best thing was to talk to people with experiance in this area and i think this is the best place there is for that any help would be great

what i want to do is some how support it on the wall away from my head

unless some one has a better idea i am planning on wraping the area around with berlap the and then brushing a cement latex sand mixture to fire proof the area to keep things safe and also to add to a mass of some kind this also will help in keeping it lite

would i need a fresh air intake with a space this small

temps i will be in at the most would be 20-30 deg's maybe a little lower

i live in tennessee but am looking to camp in other areas also

it could be that this is not possible but i am will to try anything

thanks in advance for any advice you might have good or bad

hi phil
i just wanted to say hi and say i understand what you are looking to do and if you need help in the future i am right in your back yard willing to help just for the fun of it

some problems i can see just looking for someone only doing allot of study on the subject of cob would be how much humidity we have hear could be a problem being underground there are others hear in nashville area that are building with cob (might be a good group to contact about how cob in that form would work in this area) they are in the permies site might want to look for them and contact them i can see a possible problem with cob working the way it should with needing to breath

is it strong enough ? might be the way it bind togeather from what i can see how the staw holds it all togeather its very strong but the problem there could be the undergroud factor again if it got wet in any way it would basicly turn back to mud and would fall back onto itself

maybe and i only say maybe as a infill with a strong frame to hold it all up could the cob hold up would be my guess

i would say you would have to be 100% possitive no moisture would ever get to it

now all of this info is from someone only doing allot of study on the subject no real world experiance at all

i know for a fact because others have built cob home's in our area and are living in them that it can be done above ground with a great hat (roof) and shoes (foundation)

please keep talking about it with others i would be very interested about more info on this subject and have been looking for other wanting to build in a natural way like this would for sure love to help eather way and make a connection with someone for when i am looking to build something in a natural way like this also i am looking for land to start with so when i get to that point i will be building something most likely cob infill something along that line

hope the best on your path to hobbiton may your doors be round and your feet large

well this is my first time posting something on permies i hope i mess it up lol

i have been looking into the same thing for large roof i am about to start some small experiments with a horse stall and a small cover area from my tractor and a back porch area i have been in construction most of my life i am sick and tired of all this crap costing so much money for people to just live life i want to work at things that keep people safe for it to not be about the money anyway !! so i have been studying roofs made with a feral cement concept in mind i have seen roofs made from berlap and mesh type cloth that comes in large bulk role then covered with different cement mixtures i can not think of all of the names i have studied but one that comes to mind is hyper roofing and i looked into sites that talked about farel cement ideas one man used different materials with different mixes of cement made roofs out of wire and bamboo and other woods for a base and covered with the material also just berlap covered with cement left to dry that was so strong he stood on the peek of the roof anyway if your looking for different it might be something to look into

i am very bad at typing hope you all can understand what i am talking about
