Awesome idea Dustin! There's a lot of really innovative projects happening in Detroit. Brother Nature Produce seems to be making tons of money on just a few acres growing salad mixes.

Every time I visit Detroit, I leave feeling inspired.
Hi there,

I just moved from Providence to Ohio, but I am fairly familiar with the urban farming scene in Providence. The West End Area, encompassing Westminster and Broadway Streets and including the Armory Farmers Market at Dexter Field.

To get in touch with people there, I would point you to Cluck! an urban farm store that has been battling with neighbors over opening up. The link below is their facebook page, they should be great people to get introduced to having chickens in the city.

Best of luck with the move!

A church I'm working with grew a 1 acre sunflower garden on a former urban vacant lot last year. They've ask me to help manage the field this year, and want to plant corn. I don't want to simply plant an acre of corn, and would like to do some low maintenance intercropping of corn, beans, and squash along with perennials and wildflowers.

The lot is very flat with full sun exposure. Last year, truckloads of topsoil were brought in to build up the soil, but it doesn't seem to have a lot of microbial life.

Question: What types of perennials and wildflowers would you recommend for Ohio? Or should I plant something else along with the corn?

Any other comments would be helpful to improve the lot.
