First of all this has to do with the PEP1/PEX stuff in the education subforum in case you haven't checked that out yet.

I thought it might be fun to try and veganize some of the lists and come up with additional ones. Paul mentions somewhere PEV1 should not stand for vegan and so if I am following correctly then these would just be potential PEX badge ideas. Maybe we could come up with substitute lists for chickens, bees, cows, etc.

Let's start with PEP1 - Poultry

Green Belt
20 meat birds
10 layers (mostly roosters)
1 turkey
1000 eggs

Using numbers from a quick search I saw people talking about 5 lb chickens and getting about 60% useable meat which would be 3 lbs x 20 meat birds or 60 lbs.

Seitan has roughly 80% the amount of protein chicken does at the same weight and is often used in mock chicken recipes.

To approximate protein that would be 75 lbs of seitan which would take about 180 lbs of wheat flour if you were making it from scratch.

1000 eggs (5 grams protein each) could be replaced by tofu (20 grams protein per half cup for firm) at 2 tablespoons per egg.

1 lb tofu = 2.5 cups = 40 Tablespoons

We would need to make 50 lbs of tofu to match protein content.

These numbers for comparisons came from the book Becoming Vegan by Brenda Davis & Vesanto Melina.

This was just a stab at quantifying but it could be worked out into a faux chicken badge, at least for the food production aspect.

Or you could break it down into separate badges and maybe you have to do PEX - Tofu, PEX - Seitan, and PEX - Green Manures to opt out of the poultry badge.

Instead of pigs you need to do PEX - Tempeh, PEX - Edible Roots, and PEX - Edible Legumes.

Cows might lead to PEX - Dairy Alternates, PEX - Edible Leaves, PEX - Edible Seeds, and PEX - Edible Fruits.

These other edible pathways would involve cultivating additional plants than just those done for a normal gardening badge. They could also setup more advanced belt projects based on using crops established the first year.

Wow. That is cool you are doing a big planting. I have been wanting to see how the different types do up here. Often I read they grow here but never confirmed anybody trying. Last fall I ordered some Juglans seeds from Oikos so I have some buartnuts and buartnuts x English but they are only about 2 feet tall. The black walnuts didn't come up yet. Hopefully next spring.

Did you plant mostly grafted trees, seedlings, or both?

It is funny to see flesh eaters dismiss veganism as a belief system. So then carnivorism is a belief system too?

Is it possible that a majority belief system could be wrong?

No need to answer that one
