While I have enjoyed using aquaponics to grow vegetables, I think I've discovered the true value of having an aquaponics system on the homestead in addition to a regular garden.

It is a fantastic way to root cuttings! Usually in about 4 to 8 weeks, depending on what you're trying to root, you get a cutting with healthy long roots ready to pot up or plant directly. I've tried rooting cuttings a few other ways, such as directly in water with rooting hormone and in soil and sand, but all those ways seem to take several weeks longer than putting them in an ebb and flow aquaponics system and with less success rate.

Rooting cuttings is a great way to expand what you're growing on the homestead affordably, and aquaponics is certainly making that easier. I am currently rooting elderberry, currants, fig, goji, and mulberry. All of those thing admittingly root fairly easily anyway but seem to do it much faster in the system.

Last year I put this aquaponics system together as an experiment and it went beyond my expectations with how well it worked and how productive it was. I didn't see a need to keep it operating through the warmer months but I'm starting it back up for those fresh winter greens and herbs, plus I'm just fascinated with it.

More Info About This Indoor Aquaponics System

I would be curious to see systems others have put together indoors and how successful they were.

I had the same experience with my parsley last year. We brought the stems in and kept them in a jar. It was pretty cool to watch the butterfly emerge.
