Hey there! I love to see fellow New Jerseyans getting into Permaculture! I am also in Hunterdon County and I took the Master Gardener course here a couple years ago. They really felt that hazelnut bushes/trees were the answer to a lot of our native trees succumbing to disease presently. I’m planning to fit one on my tiny third of an acre in the middle of town here, because they go to a maximum apparently of 20 feet and can get quite bushy if you don’t trim them back, which works for me to have a privacy fence from the road anyway. I haven’t decided on a Source yet, but foggy bottom farms in South Jersey was recommended to me and there’s always toadshade Native perennial plants and seeds that specializes in natives. I’m a little confused about which variety to get because Rutgers has been developing species that do particularly well in New Jersey, and they seem to be recommending also the European version . So if you’re going with a native plant supplier, they’re not going to have those varieties. I can supply links to either of those websites/phone #s if they allow that on this website, but you can also just put them into a search. Both in New Jersey. Foggy Bottom Farm specializes in hazelnut species as far as I can ascertain. Good luck let us know how it works out.
