I’m trying to use milled Charcoal from my wood stove as a filler in the basement cinderblock walls. I think it’s a good candidate for the job because it’s free, won’t rot, tolerates the occasional water logging, and after I cap the block with some concrete, it shouldn’t be any fire risk.

I think that the keys are to not use treated wood, use local sourced hollow stemmed plants, make sure that the cavities are as deep as possible, the opposite end needs to be plugged. Agree with everything you said. I definitely like the weighted pressure gauge too. The weights can be expensive so don’t loose them and keep an eye on thrift stores for them too. Since cool down takes so long for pressure canners, I like to use the largest ones I can.
My latest ponder is if the process could be automated with using a fancy home-brew controller such as one for a Blichman brew tower. This way you didn’t have to be checking in on it every few mins.
