Coming over here right from this thread: https://permies.com/t/54553/whey, combined with my *ahem* frugality and not wanting to waste, I would love to see cheese-making byproduct uses make it into the book (as several others have already mentioned). I also strongly agree with the comments on adding spices and/or herbs for varieties and for nice pictures that will help sell your book and inspire us to make more cheeses. Your book is going to be great no matter what direction you go with it!

It's amazing how much more helpful these improvements make your machine. All of the chips now drop into your trailer instead of some percentage of them flying away out of control to be wasted AND to make a mess somewhere that's not your trailer.

I often overcomplicate things and this is a great reinforcement of the need for simplicity.

Has anyone built a solar dehydrator on top of a propane grill base? My propane grill rusted out around the flame deflector and burners but I'm thinking the base would be good repurposed to make a mobile solar dehydrator.

I was thinking along the same lines as you were, although I'm in Ohio so maybe I would have a bit better odds? Other contenders for me are for dog and cat food storage, raised garden bed, smoker cabinet, or solar oven/dehydrator. I hadn't thought of cold frame as somebody had mentioned but I like that idea.

Do you leave a few inches of ash in the bottom of the refrigerator to protect the inside material from melting? I'm guessing the coals would melt the plastic inside the refrigerator unless there is some thermal barrier there.

Are there any electric conversion kits out there for those of us who do not know how to spec out a system from scratch? I have a 22hp Kubota tractor that would be of some interest to convert if/when the current 3 cylinder diesel engine dies out and I think would still do everything I need from it. Maybe more interesting for me would be my 6x4 Gator that would be great for driving into the woods to get some firewood and probably increase hauling capacity and speed over the current gas engine.

I'm sure I'll think of others later but off the top of my head for "gadgets that I don't need but that save me money to own:" water bath canner, pressure canner, dehydrator, fermentation kits, chainsaw chain sharpener, sharpening stones for other blades

I have used a mason jar for a carpenter bee trap. I know it's not the most "permie" thing to do but there's the occasional structure that needs a bit of protection. Bees were eating up the 2x10" board that frames out the top of my garage door but a mason jar trap was able to attract the carpenter bees.

It has a central hole in the wood block and holes coming in from the sides going diagonally upwards until the meet up with the central hole and then the carpenter bees fall into the mason jar.
