Please join me in welcoming Yury Smirnov, of Ecominded.net for a very special giveaway of four  Robusts, a medium sized flat cutter, which is his most popular one!

Summary

Eco-Minded Club presents amazing invention of a Russian gardener Vladimir Fokin (Russian Federation patent #2040133): ploskorez, Russian flat-cutter, cultivator Fokina or Fokin hoe, as Sepp Holzer calls it, Ploskorez Fokina ("ploskorez" means flat-cutter) - a simple and versatile permaculture tool to replace usual gardening tools like spade, hoe, rakes etc, simplifying 20 gardening operations and essential for no-till gardening.

Standard Ploskorez Fokina consists of a steel plate bent in 4 different directions at specific angles (see the picture) and a long wooden flat handle. Three of the cutting surfaces of the plate are sharpened. The blades of the cutting part of the ploskorez must always be sharpened to reduce the resistance of the soil and cutting plants.

Organic gardening and Permaculture enthusiasts using the tool have reported significant labor savings and increased yields from no-till plantings.

Staff note (Nancy Reading) :

Through Friday, all new posts in the Gear forum (aside from this thread) act as entries in the giveaway. Remember, you have to be subscribed to the Dailyish to win!

Staff note (Paul Fookes) :

The Fokin Hoe can be used in either hand.  It depends on how you attach the handle.  It is also height adjustable.  Yuri's site shows how to make the handle.
They are great bits of kit.  I would thoroughly recommend having a set.

Welcome Yury!  The thing great about permaculture is, plants voluntarily grow everywhere.  Sometimes they need chopped and dropped.  I definitely need a Fokin hoe on my homestead.

Here are a few links discussing the Fokin hoe:

Welcome Yuri

I am from South Africa and I have only recently joined the Permies forum. This is my first post on Permies.

I have been reading about your Fokin hoe and it looks like a very practical and easy too use tool.
The hoe looks so handy and effective in time saving. I would love to try one out !

Regards Ian

So far I'm really enjoying using the fokin hoe.

I had a delay getting a handle attached, as I don't have many tools at my new place yet. Then I found a long squarish handle for it in a local hardware store, my helpful neighbour drilled the holes to attach the hoe, and I got busy in the garden! It does seem much easier to use with the recommended square handle than the usual round handle I'm used to tools having, easier to grip.

It's excellent for weeding around existing plants - the narrow end was perfect for getting in between the strawberry and shallot plants!  Good for loosening soil before planting, and great for chop and drop.

This will be one of my most-used tools!
