So, the inverter has to be connected to the load terminals if the charge controller is going to control the load (inverter). the charge controller cannot turn the inverter (load) on and off if inverter is connected to battery instead of to the charge controller load terminals. Connecting the inverter (load) directly to battery, bypasses the charge controller, thus the charge controller cannot control the load(inverter).
