Hi Everyone!
We have just got a grant from the United Nations Association of Canada to make a wood chip compost heating system!
So excited - and now crashing into the holes in the information out there.. We have been reading like mad people, watching videos of Jean Pain and others- but I haven't been able to find a PERSON to talk to! A LIVE human who is actually currently doing this who can help steer us away from mistakes that have already been made.
I would be thrilled if anyone out there on super duper permies.com has any experience and would be open to talk to us. We are racing the weather- frost is already on the ground so we are at full tilt now trying to figure it out before Canadian winter drops in on us.
SO many knowledgeable folk on here, I am hoping I can find someone!!!
feel free to email me at starrylakeinfo@gmail.com if you are someone who has first hand experience and is open to a chat.
THANK YOU For all the amazing stuff on here- I will keep reading and researching- and hoping for find others who can help us make it work.
Happy Day to you all
And BTW in case you haven't seen this- there is a fantastic video that shows the size of the woodchips the Jean Pain chipper makes..... Just wish France was a little closer by.

I am thrilled to say we are looking for Employee #1- starting immediately!! We have received support from the UN to spearhead an awesome project into the viability of Wood Chip Compost Heating and Hot water systems!!
WHAAAT? Yes!  And we are seeking the adventurous soul who wants to come help us prove that, and to roll up their sleeves for tons of other things on the job list too- Please contact us ASAP if this catches your imagination!

We are located about 30 minutes south  of Bancroft Ontario Canada

Candidates for the job must be Cnd citizens or landed immigrants, legal to work in Canada and between 15-30yrs old on their first day of work. (Their criteria, not mine! Sorry! I don't share that ageist mindstate!)  It's 30 hrs a week until Jan 31 2023 with potential to extend if we can figure out a viable business model.

starrylakeinfo at Gmail.com is where to find us!   Pics are on FB at Starry Lake Dark Sky Oasis  or vitalarts.ca

Full job ad pasted here- Sorry it's long! Couldn't add the file!

Starry Lake – is Looking for EMPLOYEE #1 !
Starry Lake is a newly forming 200 acre, family owned nature retreat, near Coe Hill,  about 30 minutes south of Bancroft Ontario. The property is amazing with forest, gardens, trails, streams, rivers and a private lake.
The great news is: We are looking for EMPLOYEE #1 to join us for the next 6 months with possibility to extend.

This first team member should be enthusiastic, willing, and ready to jump into all and everything that needs to get done, from the mundane to the super inspiring. It’s a hands-on, sleeves rolled up kind of role- and will involve a wide variety of tasks from maintenance of the property and buildings to really cool and innovative research and eco-development projects.
Reclaiming and Wisely Managing the Forest
One of the main jobs for 2022 will be to claim back trails and paths that have been lost under mountains of slash from previous logging, improving diversity and helping the forest to regrow in a healthy way.
The Passive Energy Mulch Project – Hot Decay
The dry slash on the forest floor is not only a forest fire hazard impeding movement and new growth, but it is also a source of inspiration and opportunity.  It is a little-known fact that a properly established wood chip compost pile generates heat up to 70-80C which can be captured for home heating and hot water generation.
You will be a main player in the research, design and planning and creation of Wood Chip Compost Heating and Hot water systems. This might be the coolest (or hottest) project you have never heard of.  But it is true; and it can be done. This fascinating closed loop system will generate passive heat while also solving a forest fire hazard and generating quality compost that can ameliorate the soil. It will clear the forest trails while also advancing the research into the viability of using composting wood chips as a heat and hot water source on a larger scale for industrial and broader residential applications.  And You could be part of that fabulous discovery.
Invasive Species Management
We have discovered some invasive species which need to be monitored and addressed carefully. Part of this new role will include research into invasives and proper management of invasives.
DRONE Learning and Mapping Should you have experience and interest in drone operation and mapping, another aspect of this job could include creation of drone aerial photographs and video to assist with understanding the natural environment, and behaviour of wildlife for research and educational purposes.
ASTRONOMY at Starry Lake.  The Starry Lake property is located in one of the last remaining darkest sky zones in the world.  If you have an interest in astronomy and astrophotography there are plenty of opportunities to assist in the creation for programs for astronomical education, including educating the local population of the importance of dark sky to all natural creatures.

Sustainable Architecture and Land Development
Should you have skills and interest construction, architecture and land development there is also plenty of opportunity to engage in developing the property to include more innovative, inspiring accommodations and buildings.
General Maintenance In addition, this job will include maintaining the grounds, expanding the gardens, cleaning, painting and generally making this magic place shine. A can-do willing attitude is a must.

About YOU
We are thrilled to have some support from funders interested in promoting new green jobs for youth. Candidates must be between 15 and 30yrs old on their first day of work, and be Canadian citizens, landed immigrants or refugees, legally allowed to work in Canada.
This is a full time job 30 hrs a week, until the end of January 2023, when we will assess future viability of the position.
The job is an in-person, on-site post, in Coe Hill Ontario.
Wonderful experience great to have:
Experience in Construction, Working in a forest, Clearing trails, Composting, Wood chipping, Cleaning, Painting, Gardening, Knowledge about plants and all things permaculture !
So many awesome projects await!

We welcome your application and look forward to meeting you!

Hello Everyone,
Firstly I want to say OMG My head is exploding.  The amount of inspiration on this site is incredible. As if I didn't have enough things to distract me from getting anything actually DONE- now I have about 1000000 more ideas! THANK YOU EVERYONE!  I am a new Wheaton Labs fan.
Also wish I could jump on a plane and come see for myself but alas, that isn't happening at the moment. Hopefully in the future more will be possible. Meanwhile, maybe some of you passionate permies-people are near Bancroft Ontario?
I am super keen to learn how to make a rocket mass heater - or 100 of them for different uses, including hot tubs, saunas, cabins etc... of course zoning bylaws around here are enough to make a sane person pass out- but I am sure there are many creative solutions to things if the right minds get on the matter.
Also wanting to build gardens, humanure toilet systems and... well, how much time have you got?
We have a 200 acre playground just waiting for the explosive ideas in my head to come to life. What's missing is hands and know-how. We have a fair bit of know-how on basic stuff, but as is the way of things the more you learn the more you realize you have SOOOO much more to learn!
Would be awesome to connect to some local keeners. Please be in touch if you are in our hood! OR if you just wish you could visit!

Thanks again for all the amazing inspiring ideas!!!

Hi there,
I sympathize with the gent in this forum who said he spends a whole lots of time imagining cool stuff and the list of "I should try"  is miles long...  ah yes, that'd be me too..
Here is an idea I have never tried but rolls around infinished in my head..  I think would be so cool...
Understand we live in Canada where it gets Really cold in winter... like -30C
Make a wood or stone frame for walls like you would to pour concrete in,
Over winter fill that frame with ice/ water so basically you freeze walls
Before the thaw, insulate it from the outside
Figure out a roof that doesn't attract heat.. ( not sure...)
And couldn't you make a cold room like this that would at least last several months?
I am quite sure this idea is not new..  maybe someone on here has tried it?
I feel like I have heard about this someplace...

Of course if you have cold water too, lake or river you could always rig up some kind of shark tank contraption and lower your stuff down into the cold H20.. not so east to access the milk though when you want a coffee..

Thanks everyone for getting the mental wheels going!
